Catawba Unable to Handle Early Attacks by Wingate, Lose 4-1
WINGATE, NC – The Wingate Bulldogs defeated visiting South Atlantic Conference foe Catawba College Indians 4-1 on Wednesday night at the Wingate University Soccer Complex. With the win Wingate improves to 4-2 on the season and 2-1 in the conference. Catawba falls to 3-2 and 1-2, respectively.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as Shaun Gadsby drove one in just three minutes into the first half. Catawba would respond in the eighth minute with a goal by Heitor Vinci (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL/Monteverde Academy (FL)) off of a Kevin Scott (Charlotte, NC/Hickory Grove Christian) corner kick.
Wingate’s Pedro Figuiera and Askel Juul would add two more in the first half to put the game out of reach for the Indians. Gui Andrade would add one more for Wingate in the second half as he was awarded with a penalty kick after a Catawba foul.
Sanjit Kang recorded the win in goal for the Bulldogs allowing just one goal and recording two saves. Catawba’s Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS/NC Central) took the loss for the tribe recording six saves despite allowing four to get past him.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday as they travel to South Atlantic Conference opponent Newberry. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
