Stimson's Goal Strikes Down Coker 1-0
HARTSVILLE, SC – Freshman Declan Stimson (Adelaide, AUSTRALIA/Trinity College) scored a goal in the 71st minute to lift Catawba over Coker 1-0 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Coker Soccer Field. With the win the Catawba improves to 5-2-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference play. The Cobras fall to 4-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the SAC.
The two teams played to a 0-0 halftime draw in the contest. Midway through the second half Stimson was able to connect with Matt Wilkinson (Leeds, ENGLAND/Sherburn) to put in the game-winner for the Indians.
Coker was able to control the game in most statistical categories, leading in shots 14-7 as well as corners 2-0. Catawba’s Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury/NC Central) was strong in goal recording seven saves in the victory. Kyndle Cobb recorded four saves in the net for the Cobras.
The game also proved to be physical as Catawba recorded ten fouls and Coker, six. Catawba’s Kevin Scott (Charlotte, NC/Hickory Grove Christian), as well as, Coker’s Troy Quiroz and Daniel Jackson each picked up yellow cards in the contest.
Catawba will return home to face SAC opponent Queens University on Wednesday at 7:30 pm .
