Final Minutes Own Goal Leads to Catawba 2-1 Loss to Brevard
BREVARD, NC -- The Catawba College men's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Brevard Soccer Field. With the loss, Catawba drops to 7-4-1 on the season and 3-4-1 in the conference. The Tornados improve to 4-8 and 2-5.
Brevard freshman Alec Goettl jump started the Tornado offense with a header in the seventh minute after receiving a chip feed from Micah Bagwell to give the Tornados an early 1-0 lead.
In the 74th minute, the Tornados fell a man short following the second of two yellow cards issued to Marcelo Betcer. The Indians wasted no time capitalizing while Corey Faughnan headed in a pass from Michael Waller in the 76th minute to knot the match at 1.
With time dwindling down the in the second half, a costly Catawba error lead to an own goal past keeper Frankie Cardelle with just 1:57 remaining in the game. The goal gave Brevard the final 2-1 lead.
The teams combined for 26 shots while both goalies earned four saves on the day. Faughnan paced both teams with eight shots while five landed on target. Goettl paced the Tornado squad with four shots.
Catawba returns home to Frock Field on Wednesday to host SAC rival Lenoir-Rhyne at 7:30 pm.
