McCray and O'Brien Sign Free Agent Deals With NFL Teams
SALISBURY, NC -- A pair of Catawba College football players signed free agent contracts following the 2014 NFL Draft. LJ McCray signed with the San Francisco 49ers, while Danny O'Brien signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
McCray was a first team All-South Atlantic Conference pick as both a return specialist and a defensive back (safety) this past season. He was also a second team All-Region selection. In 2010, McCray was named a second team All-American as a kick returner. He set a NCAA II record with 304 kickoff return yards and two touchdowns in a game vs. Tusculum.
McCray set Catawba records for kickoff returns yards in a career with 2,212 and also with a 28.0 average. His three career returns for scores are also a school record.
O'Brien, who also played at Wisconsin and Maryland, made the most of his one season with Catawba. He set school records with 248 completions and by completing 68% of his pass attempts. O'Brien threw for 2,490 yards and 15 touchdowns with just six interceptions. He also ran for three scores.
The two join Jumal Rolle as current players from Catawba on NFL rosters. Rolle spent time with three teams last season before ending the year with the Green Bay Packers.
