Kennedy Ties School Mark as Women's Golf Goes Low in Opening Round of Season

CALERA, Ala. -- The Catawba women's golf team and senior Madison Kennedy (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury HS) both came out of the gates quickly this season.  The team shot a school record 300 to stand second after round one of the Full Moon BBQ Invitational, while Kennedy is the overall leader after equaling the school record with a 69.

The Catawba Indians stand four shots behind Shorter after the opening day of action with a tight group that includes West Georgia (301) and host Montevallo (303).  The previous low round by a Catawba squad was a 310 that came in 2006 at the Country Club of Salisbury and in 2009 at the Old North State Club.

Kennedy bettered her previous low round by three shots, breaking into the 60s for the first time in her collegiate career.  She equaled the mark set by Paige Haverty at the Country Club of Salisbury on October 19, 2004.  Kennedy holds a one stroke lead over Columbus State's Courtney Lowery, who is playing as an individual.

Three Catawba freshmen followed Kennedy, all with 77s.  They were Alexis Kershaw (Winston-Salem, N.C./Ledford HS), Anthea Gnielinski (Bremen, GERMANY/SZ Bordestrasse HS) and Victoria Hedrick (Lexington, N.C./C. Davidson HS).  The trio are tied for 13th.
