White holds off Blue to win annual spring Fooball gameThe White scored two early touchdowns and held off the Blue team to earn a 20-17 win in Catawba’s annual spring football game. Red-shirt quarterback Delany Mills (Jacksonville, NC) tossed a pair of scores, while tailback Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) ran for 79 yards to pace the White.
After Samario Houston (Charlotte, NC) intercepted Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) in the Blue’s first series, Wallace ripped of a 30-yard run and Mills followed with a nine-yard strike to Corey Ready (Aiken, SC) for a 7-0 lead. In its second series, Wallace had runs of 17 and 16 yards, while Mills connected with Rod Tenor (Cooleemee, NC) for 31 yards to set up his second scoring toss to Ready. The second covered 11 yards.
The Blue would take its first second quarter possession 80 yards to cut into the deficit. Samples would hit Jasonus Tillery (Newport News, VA) on a 44-yard strike and Mario Crowe (Charlotte, NC) ran for 32 yards on the drive that was capped by a two-yard run by Samples to pull the Blue within 13-7. A 34-yard pass from Samples to Colin Reese (Charlotte, NC) set up a 30-yard field goal from Alan Rohrbaugh (Lexington, NC) to close the half with the White holding a 13-10 edge.
The White would use nearly the entire third quarter in a drive that ended with a one-yard plunge by Hollis Owens (Jacksonville, FL). Owens ran for 38 yards on five carries and had a 21-yard carry earlier in the drive. A fourth-down offside penalty and two completions, of 20 and 11 yards, from Mills to tight end Adam Smith (Candor, NC) kept the drive alive.
Samples would help bring the Blue back, hitting Brad McCrary (Lexington, NC) for two big plays on the ensuing drive, including one of 24 yards on third-and-23. Samples capped the drive with another two-yard run to make the score 20-17. After holding the White, the Blue team drove to the 32, but a sack and penalty led to a “hail mary” pass on the final play that fell incomplete.
Mills completed 7-of-13 passes for 96 yards for the White. Smith and ready each had three catches. Samples hit on 14-of-27 passes for 219 yards through the air and added two scores on the ground. Crowe was the top rusher for the Blue with 40 yards on eight carries. He also had three catches, as did Tillery. McCrary had four receptions for 60 yards. Khanis Hubbard (Raleigh, NC) recorded a pair of sacks for the White squad.
