Littlejohn Takes SAC Football Offensive Player of the Week Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games the second week of the season. Catawba running back Cary Littlejohn (Columbus, N.C./Polk Co. HS) and Mars Hill receiver Keshaun Taylor were tabbed Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Newberry linebacker back Taylor McDonnell was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Wingate punter Christopher Birozes picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Littlejohn, a senior, ran for a career-best 192 yards to lead the Catawba College Catawba Indians to a 35-21 win over Davidson on Sept. 12. He nearly set a career-best for yards in a half as he ran the ball for 130 yards, 16 yards shy of his previous best. Littlejohn scored the opening touchdown of the game with a 64 yard scamper to put the Catawba Indians up, 6-0. Littlejohn rushed 27 times for an average of 7.1 yards per carry. The award marks his first Offensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Taylor, a sophomore from Homestead, Fla., set the Mars Hill record with four touchdown receptions in a narrow 44-34 loss vs. FCS No. 10 Chattanooga on Sept. 12. Taylor hauled in nine balls for a career-high 157 yards, including a career-best 75 yard touchdown catch. Taylor averaged 17.4 yards per reception to earn his first Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.
McDonnell, a senior from Bluffton, S.C., registered 11 tackles, a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss in a 17-14 loss to FCS Jacksonville on Sept. 12. His two sacks dropped the Dolphins back 22 yards and his three tackles for loss put Jacksonville in a combined 23 yard hole. McDonnell forced a fumble and recovered the ball on one of his sacks as he finished the contest with 10 solo stops. The award is his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Birozes, a sophomore from Suwanee, Ga., averaged 40 yards per punt on five boots as Wingate improved its record to 2-0 overall with a 30-16 victory over Shaw on Sept. 12. Birozes had two fair catches, three punts inside the 20 and a long punt of 51 to finish the contest with 200 yards. The honor marks his first Special Teams Player of the Week award this season.
