Sheehan Named AstroTurf SAC Offensive Player of the Week
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games the 10th week of the season. Catawba quarterback Mike Sheehan was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Carson-Newman’s Jason Williams was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Mars Hill’s Keshaun Taylor picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Sheehan, a junior from Wilmington, N.C., threw for 234 yards and pair of scores, while rushing for another touchdown in the Catawba Indians’ 24-6 win over Tusculum on Nov. 7. He completed 14-of-24 passes for an average of 9.8 yards per pass. Sheehan accounted for all three scores in the win with a two-yard score early in the second quarter and touchdown strikes of 25 and 35 yards to help builed a 21-3 lead in the third quarter. The win secured at least a share of the 2015 SAC Championship and a win at home against Lenoir-Rhyne on Nov. 14 would give the Catawba Indians the out-right championship. The award is his first Offensive Player of the Week nod this season.
Williams, a junior from Fayetteville, Ga., secured his second defensive touchdown of the season with a 56-yard pick six early in the second half as Carson-Newman defeated region rival North Greenville on Nov. 7. The play marked Carson-Newman’s first pick six since the 2013 season and helped swing the momentum back in the Eagles’ favor in a tight 48-45 victory. Williams also chipped in five tackles and two pass break-ups. The honor is his first Defensive Player of the Week plaudit this season.
Taylor, a sophomore from Homestead, Fla., turned in his first kickoff return touchdown for the Lions this season to push Mars Hill to a 42-24 win over Wingate on Nov. 7. His career-best 90 return came in the second quarter to give the Lions a 26-13 advantage. The selection is his first Special Teams Player of the Week honor this season.
