Turnovers Plague Football in Loss to Limestone

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Limestone scored a 6-0 win over host Catawba in football action at a rainy and muddy Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Saints improve to 2-4, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-4.

Limestone managed just two first downs and had only 48 yards of offense, but got the only points they would need on the second snap from scrimmage when Raymond Hall picked up a fumble and ran it in from 34 yards out.  The point after was blocked, but the Saints led 6-0 and held on by helping cause seven Catawba turnovers.

Catawba’s defense was dominate on the afternoon and while the offense drove into the red zone five times, the Indians could not put any points on the board.  The Indians were stopped on downs at the Saint nine midway through the second quarter, missed on a 24-yard field goal on its next possession and ended the half with an interception in the end zone.  Limestone picked off two third-quarter passes inside its own five and Catawba fumbled away its last chance in the final seconds on a fumble at the Saint three.

Limestone amassed only 12 yards in the opening half and could not make a first down.  The Saints didn’t have a snap on Catawba’s half of the field until Joey Felder blocked a punt that gave Limestone possession at the Catawba 48.  Ivan Corbin would produce the biggest offensive play of the day for the Saints in that drive with a 33-yard run to the Catawba 15.  It marked only the second first down for Limestone on the day with the first coming on a penalty in the previous Saint possession.

The Saints drive stalled inside the Catawba red zone and Jeremy Addison (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) blocked a field goal try to give the offense one last chance.  Reid Carlton (Lecanto, Fla./Trinity Catholic) completed a pair of passes to help get the Indians to the Limestone 40 and ran for 12 to the 28.  Eamon Smart (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral) ran for 12 more yards and after a sack Carlton completed a pass to Jourdan Osinskie (Greensboro, N.C./S. Alamance) that got the ball to the Saint three.  Two plays later, a bad exchange on a handoff produced the final Catawba turnover and Limestone ran out the clock.

David Burgess (Morganton, N.C./Freedom) return to action for the first time since the season opener and ran for 73 yards.  Carlton completed 9-of-25 passes for 117 yards, but was intercepted five times.  Sam Mobley (Monroe, N.C./Parkwood/Louisburg) caught four passes and Bruce Smith (Winston-Salem, N.C./N. Davidson) grabbed three.

Michael Peppers (Clemson, N.C./Daniel) had Catawba’s lone sack, while Trey Evans (Barnsville, Ga./Lamar Co.) and CJ Barksdale each produced three and half stops for losses.  Jared Lee (Forest Hills, N.C./Forest Hills) had an interception for Limestone’s lone turnover.

Limestone had 49 yards on the ground with Ga’Quan Maize gaining 27.  Corbin added 26 yards on the ground.  Corban completed one of his 11 pass attempts, but it went for a negative yard to Maize.  Titus Williams had 14 stops on defense, while Joshua Simmons had three interceptions.

Catawba travels to Mars Hill next Saturday for a 1 pm kickoff.
