Woodard Takes Home SAC Football Defensive Player of Week Honors
ROCK HILL, S.C. (TheSAC.com) -- The South Atlantic Conference announced its AstroTurf SAC Football Players of the Week for games played the seventh week of the season on Monday and Catawba defensive back Case Woodard picked up his third Defensive Player of the Week honor of the season. Newberry quarterback Raleigh Yeldell was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Week, while Wingate kicker Caleb Baird picked up Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
Woodard, a senior from Snellville, Ga., picked off a pair of passes and blocked a punt that he recovered for a touchdown to help the Catawba Indians to a 33-22 win at Mars Hill on Oct. 15. Woodard also chipped in three pass break-ups and accounted for five total tackles in the win. His blocked punt and recovered touchdown swung the momentum in Catawba’s favor as the Catawba Indians took the 10-7 lead and went on to the win.
Yeldell, a senior from Edgefield, S.C., passed for 71 percent, 312 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Wolves to a 34-19 win over Carson-Newman on Oct. 15. He completed 27-of-38 passes as he connected on touchdown strikes with four difference receivers. He led scoring drives on four possessions to battle back from a 13-0 deficit. Yeldell also carried the ball for 23 yards on six attempts. The honor marks his third Offensive Player of the Week selection this season.
Baird, a senior from Kinston, N.C., connected on all of his point after touchdown attempts as he went 7-for-7 in the Bulldogs’ win over of Lenoir-Rhyne on Oct. 15. The award marks his second Special Teams Player of the Week plaudit this season.
