Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision at Tusculum
GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Host Tusculum scored a pair of goals midway through the first half and went on to shutout Catawba 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field. The win improves the Pioneers to 10-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 6-6-2 and 5-4-1.
Both Tusculum goals came off free kick opportunities. Carlie Thornber scored the first goal in the 28th minute as she volleyed home a header after the kick. Two minutes later, Rachel Roberts tallied after a flick with her shot to the far post. Sonja Ballmert and Olivia Kilgore had the assists on both goals.
Tusculum held a 12-10 edge on shots, while the Lady Indians took six of the seven corner kicks in the contest. Shelby Thompson (Charlotte, N.C./Hopewell/Charlotte) played the first 80 minutes in goal for Catawba and made five saves. Shannon Hardy was untested in her 10 minutes. Miriah Martin stopped five shots in recording the shutout for Tusculum.
Catawba will travel to Limestone on Tuesday for a 7 pm contest in a game added late to the schedule due to the cancellation of the season opener versus Nova Southeastern.
