Men's Soccer ties Belmont Abbey 1-1

BELMONT, NC – Catawba College and Belmont Abbey battled to a 1-1 tie in men’s soccer action at Belmont Abbey on Thursday afternoon. Both teams now stand at 1-0-1 on the season. The Crusaders got on the board first in the 23rd minute of the game. After a Catawba free kick was blocked by a wall of defenders, Jeff Strebler (Jacksonville, FL) raced downfield and passed to Allen Owensby (Asheville, NC), whose shot was deflected by Catawba goalie Dan Fitzgerald, but the momentum of the shot carried it into the net and Belmont Abbey led 1-0. The Tribe tied the score eleven minutes later when freshman Nathan Zuzga (Troy, MI) blasted a right-footed shot past Crusader goalie Sean O’Connor. With under a minute left in the half, Strebler fired a shot from outside the penalty area that was saved by Fitzgerald, but the rebound went right to Crusader forward Mike Kirby, but his point-blank shot hit the right goal post. Catawba had the better scoring chances in the season half, out-shooting the Crusaders 5-2, but neither team could put the ball in the net. O’Connor made six saves and Fitzgerald two.
