Orr's Late Tally Secures Home Tournament Match
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Senior Ian Orr (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) scored with a minute to play to clinch Catawba’s spot in the top four the South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer table. Orr’s goal with just a minute remaining gave the Catawba Indians a 2-1 win over visiting Lincoln Memorial on Friday night at the Frock Soccer Complex, improving Catawba to 10-6 overall and 7-4 in the SAC. The Railsplitters fall to 10-6 and 6-5.
With overtime looming, Jack Pettett (Hove, England) played a long through ball down the middle. Orr beat an onrushing LMU keeper to the ball about 15 yards from goal and toed a shot past for the winning goal.
Lincoln Memorial had taken an early lead in the 33rd minute. A corner by Victor Peres was headed home at the near post by Felipe Machado that just got through the hands of Catawba keeper Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne).
Catawba struck back four minutes later. Orr headed a ball back across the goal mouth to Tim Frederik-Lange (Limburgerhof, Germany), who sent his header into the top right corner. The play started off a corner from Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) and bounded around several times before the goal.
Gonzalez had six saves for Catawba, all in the second half. August Ahlin had one save for LMU.
Catawba has secured a home playoff game in the first round of the SAC Tournament on Tuesday. The Indians will be the third seed and host Mars Hill if Lenoir-Rhyne fails to beat Newberry on Saturday. Catawba will be fourth and face LMU again if the Bears win.
