Men's Soccer Upended by LMU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lincoln Memorial advanced to the semifinals of the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament with a 2-1 win over host Catawba on Tuesday night at Frock Field. The fifth-seeded Railsplitters avenged a Friday loss to Catawba by the same 2-1 score, improving to 11-6. The Catawba Indians, seeded fourth, end their season at 10-7.
Catawba scored the opening goal. Tim Frederik-Lange (Limburgerhof, Germany) sent a cross to the back post that was knocked home by Daniele Proch (Arco, Italy) in the ninth minute. LMU tied the contest in the 29th minute, converting a penalty kick. George Burne was brought down in the box and Victor Peres put a shot just inside the left post off the fingertips of Catawba keeper Joe Gonzalez (Marion, N.Y./Marion/LeMoyne).
It was Burne that provided the winning goal in the 58th minute. After a short corner, Danilo da Silva dribbled to the top of the box and curled a cross to Burne at the back post, who headed it back into the left corner for what would be the winner.
LMU held a 19-7 edge in shots. Gonzalez made seven saves. August Ahlin collected three saves for the Railsplitters.
