Volleyball Ends Win Streak With Loss at Anderson
ANDERSON, S.C. -- Catawba was swept by host Anderson in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at the Abney Center. The Trojans claimed the 25-21, 25-15 and 25-18 win to improve to 18-11 overall and 14-7 in the SAC. The Lady Indians had a seven-match winning streak snapped in falling to 16-11 and 13-8.
Kimberly Hurtado (Indian Trail, N.C./Sun Valley) recorded a game-high 11 kills for Catawba. Alex Hopper (Madison, N.C./McMichael) followed with 10 as the Lady Indians hit just 18.5% compared to Anderson’s 30%. Libero Meredith Furr (Concord, N.C./Cox Mill) collected 26 digs.
Marissa Mitter posted 13 kills for Anderson with 14 digs. Rachel Burts had 12 kills and five blocks. Emily Conard recorded 22 digs and Emily Conlin handed out 45 assists with three aces.
Four straight Anderson errors had Catawba up 6-2 in the opening set. The Lady Indians kept the lead at 13-9 before a 10-1 Trojan run sparked the hosts. A couple of kills from Hurtado and an ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, N.C./Maiden) got Catawba within 24-21 but a Kathryn Hughes kill ended the set.
Anderson pulled out to a 10-5 lead on a kill from Serena Jackson in set two. The Trojans would build the edge to 20-10 on a block by Burts and Allison Gaminde. Mitter’s kill ended the set.
A kill by Mitter forced a Catawba timeout in the third set with the Trojans up 9-5. Kills from Hughes and Burts pushed the margin to 15-8 and it was 20-12 following an ace from Conlin. Burts had consecutive kills and a block to put Anderson ahead 24-16 and would end the match on another kill.
Catawba closed its regular season on Saturday with a noon match at Newberry.
