Baseball Opens With Win Behind Almond's Six RBI
MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) combined for six hits and nine RBI, while freshman Bryan Ketchie (Woodleaf, N.C./W. Rowan) earned a win in his first start as 21st-ranked Catawba opened its baseball season with a 13-3 victory over Pfeiffer on Wednesday afternoon at Ferebee Field.
Almond had three hits and six RBI to pace the Catawba Indians with Smith adding three hits and three RBI. Almond homered and doubled twice, while Smith had a double and a home run. Ketchie tossed five innings and surrendered just two hits and two unearned runs. He fanned three.
After an error and a double by Smith, Almond opened the scoring with the first of his doubles and a 2-0 edge. Smith capped a three-run second with a solo home run to stake the Indians to a 5-1 lead after two innings. Almond doubled home a run in the fifth then followed Smith’s two-run single in the eighth with a three-run homer to cap the scoring.
Pfeiffer got a leadoff double by John Elwood in the first, who would later score on a throwing error. After that hit, Ketchie retired 10 straight before Zach Scudder’s double in the fourth. Scudder would also score on an error.
Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) had two hits for Catawba and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) scored three runs. Elwood and Scudder each had two hits for Pfeiffer, who was limited to six hits by six Catawba hurlers. The Indians banged out a dozen hits.
Catawba travels to Cleveland, Tenn., this weekend to face Lee University. The teams are set to play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.
