Men's Lacrosse Falls to Belmont Abbey in Home Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Tenth-ranked Belmont Abbey cruised to a 17-5 win over host Catawba in men’s lacrosse action on Friday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win was the opener for the Crusaders, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-1.
Catawba cut an early 2-0 deficit to 2-1 on Trevor Bellotte’s (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) goal at the 10:59 mark of the opening quarter, but the Crusaders notched the next three goals to lead 5-1 after 15 minutes. Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) pulled the Indians within 5-2 early in the second, but Kyle McGinley scored two of the final three Belmont Abbey goals before the half to give the visitors an 8-2 edge at the break.
Belmont Abbey stretched its lead to 12-3 after three quarter and to 15-3 midway through the final quarter. McGinley finished with four goals and an assist for the Crusaders. Brendan McGovern notched three goals. Harley Whitham posted 13 saves.
Catawba is home against Mount Olive for its next game a week from Saturday at 2 pm.
