Brown Hits For Career-High 23 Points in Loss at #10 Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Queens pulled away from a one-point halftime lead to take a 93-85 win over visiting Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday night at Curry Arena. The 10th-ranked Royals improve to 23-2 overall and 17-2 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians drop to 16-9 and 10-9.
Catawba trailed by a point at the half and took a brief lead on Troy Warren’s (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) basket to start the second stanza. Queens grabbed the lead back then used an 11-0 run during the first five minutes of the half to go up 54-42 on Mike Davis’ three-pointer at the 15:50 mark.
Queens built the margin to 19 midway through the final half and led by double digits until the final minute when Catawba closed within six with five seconds to play.
Catawba started hot, shooting 52% in the first half and going 6-of-13 from long range. Queens made 50% in the first half then upped it to 71% in the second half as it hit on 17-of-24 shots to finish at 60% for the game. Catawba canned 53% in the second half.
Rakeen Brown (Hampton, Va./Bethel/Delaware St.) scored a career-high 23 points for the Indians. Five of his eight field goals came from three-point range. Jameel Taylor (Anderson, S.C./Hanna) followed with 19 points and eight rebounds. KJ Arrington (Newport News, Va./Denbigh/Henry CC) tossed in 13 points and Warren had 10.
All five Queens starters scored in double figures with Jalin Alexander leading the way with 21 points. Ike Agusi added 10 with Daniel Camps collecting 16 points and seven rebounds. Todd Withers and Davis closed out the double-figure scorers with 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Catawba finishes up its regular-season road slate on Saturday with a 4 pm tip-off at Brevard.
