Baseball Completes Weekend Sweep of Shippensburg

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Freshman Hunter Shepherd (Salisbury, N.C./Homeschooled) pitched into the seventh for his for collegiate win and 21st-ranked Catawba completed a weekend sweep of visiting Shippensburg in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 5-3, while the Raiders fall to 0-3.

Shepherd scattered eight hits over six and a third innings, allowing three runs with no walks and one strikeout.  Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) rapped out three more hits, while Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had two hits and drove in two.

Hanes put Catawba on top in the fourth with a two-run single that snapped a 1-1 tie.  He later scored on a Setzer hit for a 4-1 edge after four.  The Indians tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth before Shippensburg rallied back.

Cash Gladfelter’s two-run double in the seventh chased Shepherd and closed the gap to 6-3.  Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly/Liberty), who had come on to strike out the final two batters of the seventh with two on, allowed an unearned run in the eighth before turning it over to Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) for the ninth.  Blanton struck out two as he sat down the side in order for his first save.

Catawba also got two hits each from Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), Nick Coble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Florence-Darlington) and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian).  Nick Spangler and Dalton Hoiles both had two hits for Shippensburg.

Catawba settles in for five more home games this week, starting with Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 3 pm.
