Baseball Out Slugs Pfeiffer For 22-12 Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Nick Coble (Concord, N.C./Mt. Pleasant/Florence-Darlington) went 4-for-5 with a pair of homer and five RBI as Catawba outslugged visiting Pfeiffer 22-12 in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 6-3, while the Falcons fall to 4-5.
Pfeiffer scored three times in the top of the first as Zach Scudder had a RBI double and Tanner Mathis a two-run homer. Catawba erased the deficit with an eight-run bottom half. Coble hit the first of his two homers, a three-run shot, to put the Indians up 4-3. Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) added a two-run homer in the frame and Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) a two-run single.
Coble led off the second with home run and Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) did the same in the third. Pfeiffer hung around and were down just 12-8 after Christian Marciano’s two-run homer in the fifth. The Indians then put the game away, scoring six in the sixth and four in the seventh.
Four of the six Catawba runs in the sixth were unearned and Fowler capped a two-hit day with a two-run triple in the seventh to give him four RBI. Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) improved to 1-1 with the win in relief. Will Altemueller (1-1) took the loss for Pfeiffer.
Setzer joined Coble with four hits for Catawba and scored four runs. Jackson Raper (Concord, N.C./Robinson) had three hits and Smith drove in four runs. Cody McKenzie homered and had three hits for Pfeiffer.
The teams combined to use 44 players. Catawba sent seven hurlers to the mound, while the Falcons used five arms.
Catawba hosts Mount Olive on Wednesday at 4 pm.
