Cook's Late Goal Seals Men's Lacrosse Win Over Pfeiffer
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba held off a late Pfeiffer rally to top the visiting Falcons 13-11 in men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians even their record at 2-2, while Pfeiffer falls to 0-3.
When Dalton Cook (St. Augustine's, Fla./Bartram Trail) capped a 7-2 Catawba run with his third goal of the game, the Indians led 11-4 at the 5:06 mark of the third quarter. Pfeiffer put home two goals to close the quarter then scored three in the opening six minutes of the fourth to make it 11-9. Kyle Barna had three of those goals.
Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) stopped the run at the 7:59 mark, but Barna and Jared Nelson closed the gap to 12-11 with 4:29 left. Cook got the final goal, with 3:27 remaining, just as Catawba was killing off a penalty.
Barna had five goals for Pfeiffer. Nelson had a goal and four assists. Mike Moorehead made eight saves in goal, while Ryan Applegate (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) made 16 for Catawba. Cody Lamond was outstanding in the face-off circle for Pfeiffer, winning 19 of 26 tries.
Catawba returns to action on Saturday as the Indians travel to Chowan for a 3 pm start.
