Baseball's Bats Stay Hot in 19-5 Win Over Mount Olive
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba continued a hot home stand with a 19-5 win over visiting Mount Olive in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians improve to 7-3, while the Trojans fall to 7-4.
Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) collected four more hits and connected on his sixth home run to lead off the bottom of the first. He drove in four in the game and scored three runs. Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) added three hits and three RBI, while Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) drove in three on two hits with a homer.
Catawba led 5-0 after three innings, scoring three in the first and two in the third on Fowler’s homer. It was 10-1 after six with Setzer driving two in the fifth with a single. Catawba secured the win by pushing across nine runs in the seventh. Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had a two-run double in the inning.
Bryan Ketchie (Woodleaf, N.C./W. Rowan) improved to 2-0 with the win. He tossed five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on three hits. He fanned six.
Alvin Swoope drove in four of the five runs for Mount Olive with two hits, including a home run. Ricky Surum also collected a pair of hits.
Catawba begins conference play on this weekend against Carson-Newman. The three-game series gets underway on Friday night at 6 pm.
