Women's Lacrosse Rallies to Win Home Opener
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba doubled up visiting Roberts Wesleyan in the second half in rallying for an 11-9 victory in women’s lacrosse action on Thursday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Redhawks drop their opener.
Roberts Wesleyan led 5-3 at the break with Cassley Jackowski scoring all five goals for the Redhawks. Catawba quickly rallied after the break, tying the game in the first five minutes of the second half on goals from Gianna Pezzulo (Henniker, N.H./Cushing Academy) and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep).
The Redhawks got the lead back on a goal from Megan Burnham with 24 minutes left, but Catawba reeled off the next four goals and led the rest of the way. After Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SW Guilford) tied it, Pezzulo gave Catawba the lead with 12:53 left. Kruse and Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) pushed the lead to 9-6 with 10 minutes to go.
Jessica Giancursio scored twice for RWC to help get the Redhawks within 10-9 at the 4:11 mark. Pezzulo accounted for the final margin off a free-position shot with 1:38 left. Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) came up with three saves in the final minute to keep the two-goal edge.
Anselmo finished with 15 saves on the day. Pezzulo and Kruse each scored three goals with Salay picking up two. Hunt scored a goal and handed out two assists.
Jackowski finished with five goals and two assists for Roberts Wesleyan. Giancursio had two goals and an assist. Shannon Knapp made 19 saves for the Redhawks.
Catawba hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 7 pm.
