Women's Lacrosse Takes Win Over WV Wesleyan
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba topped visiting West Virginia Wesleyan 17-9 in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday night at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-1, while the Bobcats fall in their opener.
Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) got Catawba off to a quick start with a pair of goals in the opening four minutes. The Lady Indians led 4-0 before WVW cut the margin to 4-2 midway through the first half. Catawba then spurted out to an 8-3 lead at the break.
The Bobcats quickly pulled within 8-5 early in the second half on goals from Natalie Schaffner and Hannah Antonelli, but Catawba posted six of the next seven goals to go on top 14-6. WVW made it 14-9 with five minutes to play before the Lady Indians scored the final three goals.
Catawba got four goals from freshman Katie Barth (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point) along with three from Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) and fellow rookie Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SW Guilford). Salay had two assists with Kruse picking up two goals and two helpers.
Antonelli and Schaffer each had four goals for West Virginia Wesleyan. Schaffner added two assists. Alexus Bonner had 20 saves as the Bobcats were outshot 46-21 by Catawba.
Catawba faces Queens in a league game at Queens on Thursday at 4 pm.
