Women's Basketball Upsets #2 Anderson to Reach SAC Semifinals
ANDERSON, S.C. -- The Catawba women’s basketball team kept its season alive for one more game, upsetting second-seeded Anderson 70-64 in the opening round of the South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Wednesday night at the Abney Center. The seventh-seeded Catawba Indians improve to 16-12 and advance to a Saturday semifinal meeting with third-seeded Wingate at Furman’s Timmons Arena. The Trojans fall to 21-6 and will await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Southeast Regional.
The Lady Indians shook off a tough first quarter that saw them trail by as much as 20-7 before settling for a 24-12 deficit after 10 minutes. Catawba shot just 25% in the opening frame.
Catawba mounted its rally late in the second quarter. Down 33-25 with just over three minutes before the half, the Lady Indians reeled off 13 of the final 17 points to lead 38-37 at the break. Serena Brown (Ft. Washington, Md./Bowie) capped the comeback on a three-point play with two seconds left.
The game was tightly contested for most of the second half, although a three-pointer by Bri Johnson (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell/Belmont Abbey) to start the fourth quarter had the Lady Indians up 56-49. Anderson scored the next seven points and grabbed a 60-59 lead on a basket by Madison Baggett with 4:25 to go.
Johnson answered the basket to give Catawba a 61-60 edge with 3:30 left. Neither team scored over the next several possessions before Elizabeth Webb (Statesville, N.C./W. Iredell) added a Catawba point with a free throw with 1:59 to play. That scored stayed until Jasmine Franklin went to the line for Anderson with a chance to tie with 16 seconds remaining. She was only able to make the second of the two shots to leave the Lady Indians up 62-61.
Catawba sealed the win at the line. Marshauna Butler (Bowie, Md./Bowie/Stony Brook) hit two with 13 seconds left and Alexis Newbold (Bowie, Md./Bowie) stole the Trojan inbound pass and cashed in for two more and Catawba’s lead was 66-61. Johnson and Brown added two each in the final 11 seconds and the upset was complete.
Terri Rogers (Burlington, N.C./E. Alamance) had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Butler posted 15 points with Johnson and Brown each adding a dozen. Newbold pulled down 11 rebounds and scored eight points.
Alexy Mollenhauer led Anderson with 17 points and eight rebounds. Heather Jankowy added 13 points and five assists, while Franklin totaled 10 points.
The win marked the first for Catawba against a team with a winning record since a 70-52 victory over Newberry on January 18.
