Baseball Blanked By Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. -- Host Saint Leo shut out 22nd-ranked on just two hits, winning 11-0 in baseball action on Wednesday night at Southard Stadium.  The Lions improve to 10-6, while the Catawba Indians fall to 13-6.

Saint Leo held a 6-0 lead after two innings and capped the night on a three-run homer by Michael Mann in the fifth.

Michael Elwell (Mooresville, N.C./Lake Norman) gave up a leadoff home run to Lane Stancil to open the home first and the Lions went on to score another run and load the bases with no outs.  Elwell came back to limit the damage by striking out the next three batter, all looking.

Saint Leo added four more runs in the second.  Mann had a two-run double in the outburst.

Catawba never really threatened off five Lion hurlers.  Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) walked in the first, but was erased on a double play.  Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) singled with two outs in the third and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) walked with two outs in the fourth.

The Indians went down in order over the next three innings before Mike Manoogian (Concord, N.H./Concord/LaSalle) walked in the eighth.  Catawba did finally get multiple runners on in the ninth.  Zach Queen (Charlotte, N.C./Lake Norman Charter) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) singled with one out.  Ben Bomberger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central/Coastal Carolina) walked with two outs, but the Indians could not get a run home.

Jordan Pendleton (1-1) went five innings to even his record, allowing a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.  Mann swung the big bat with three hits and six RBI.  Alex Mata had two hits and drove in three.

Catawba returns home to Newman Park on Friday, hosting Coker in a league series the starts at 6 pm.
