Barreto Swims B Final at NCAA II Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Catawba freshman Joao Barreto (Nireroi, Brazil) earned Catawba a point at the NCAA II Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday as he finished 16th in the 100 fly. The Championships will continue through Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex, but Catawba has wrapped up its three events at the Nationals.
Barreto qualified for the ‘B’ final by swimming a 48.54 in the preliminaries which was the 11th best time in school history. He posted a 49.03 in the final in finishing 16th.
Barreto joined Federico Borrego Higareda (Mexico City, Mexico), Arnold Blohme (Daphne, Ala./Fairhope) and Aly Hegazi (Cairo, Egypt) in the 200 free relay. The team placed 22nd in a time of 1:24.19 which was the 11th best time in school history. Barreto started the relay with a 20.94 split with Higareda following at 21.00. Blohme swam the third led in 21.71 and Hegazi anchored the relay with a 20.54 split.
