Salay's Last Second Goal Lifts Women's Lacrosse Over LMU
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J./N. Burlington Regional) scored twice in the final 30 seconds as Catawba rallied for a 17-16 win over visiting Lincoln Memorial in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the SAC, while the Lady Railsplitters fall to 2-3 and 1-1.
After leading by three goals early in the second half, Catawba had fallen behind as LMU outscored the Lady Indians 5-1 to take a 15-14 lead on a free-position shot by Zoe Zervos with 12:50 remaining. Saley tied it with 9:56 to go only to see Lincoln Memorial answer with 4:26 left.
Salay would capitalize after a frantic final minute that saw both teams turn it over twice. LMU was called for a false start on a restart with 40 seconds remaining and Salay scored to knot the game at 16-all with just 27 seconds remaining. The Lady Indians won the ensuing draw control, but missed on its first opportunity with 16 seconds left. Catawba kept possession and as the clock ticked down Nicole Hunt (Pleasant Garden, N.C./SE Guilford) found Salay in front of the goal for her game-winner with just 1.3 seconds to play.
Hunt led Catawba with five goals and handed out two assists. She also caused three turnovers. Salay and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) both had three goals. Kruse handed out two assists. Hannah Scott (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne’s County) won four draw controls including the key one with 25 seconds left and the score tied.
Jasmin Click and Casey Kelley each scored five goals for LMU. Heather Roache added two goals. Shannon Novak made 11 saves in goal.
Catawba will host Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 4 pm.
