Baseball Raps Out 14 Hits in Win at Barton
WILSON, N.C. -- Catawba claimed a 7-3 victory at Barton in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The 28th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 20-7, while the Bulldogs fall to 18-12.
The Indians doubled up Barton in hits, 14-7, with Jackson Raper (Concord, N.C./Robinson), Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) and Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) homering and collecting two hits. Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan), Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) and Bryce Fowler (Greenwood, S.C./Greenwood/Presbyterian) also had two hits in the win.
Catawba trailed 2-0 after two innings then got on the scoreboard in the third on Raper’s solo homer. The Indians struck for three in the fourth to take a lead it never relinquished. Hanes tied the game as he tripled home Fowler then Raper knocked in Hanes with a two-out single. Setzer capped the inning with a run-scoring double.
Bowden helped add to the lead with a solo homer in the fifth and Hanes connected on a solo home run with two outs in the ninth. Almond picked up a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Barton scored on an error in the first then doubled its lead with Troy Maslowski’s two-out single in the second. Catawba kept the Bulldogs silent until the ninth when Barton scored another unearned run.
Ryan Kahny (High Point, N.C./Central) got the win as he tossed two and a third innings of scoreless relief after entering to start the third. He improved to 2-1, allowing a pair of hits while striking out three. Russ Weiker (Albemarle, N.C./S. Stanly/Liberty) followed with two and two-thirds scoreless frames. He walked three, but did not allow a hit.
Calvin Hawkes had two of Barton’s hits. Jordan Ramos (0-1) took the loss has he allowed five runs off 11 hits with four strikeouts in five innings.
