Women's Lacrosse Upended by Coker
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Coker converted on 5-of-8 free-position shots and defeated host Catawba 15-9 in South Atlantic Conference women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Cobras improve to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-3 and 2-2.
The teams matched goals over the first 15 minutes before Coker closed the half with a four-goal run to lead 8-4 at the break. Mackenzie Baker scored two of those goals, including one with a player advantage to give the Cobras a 5-4 lead at the 15:12 mark.
Coker built its lead to 11-5 before a pair of goals from Imani Grays (Greensboro, N.C./SE Guilford) cut the Catawba deficit to 11-7. The Lady Indians were still within four with 10 minutes left, but Coker iced the game with three goals over a three-minute span to go up 15-8 with 2:35 left.
Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) led Catawba, scoring three goals and handing out an assist. Grays had two goals and two assists, while Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.C./N. Burlington Regional) had a pair of goals. Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) notched 10 saves.
Marabeth Durden had four goals for Coker. Haley McCusker tallied three goals with an assist, while Faith Kent had two goals and three helpers. Cassie Williams recorded 11 saves.
Five of Coker’s goals came on free-position shots, while Catawba was 2-of-4. The Cobras held an edge in shots (30-24) and ground balls (25-19).
Catawba will host Wingate on Saturday at 1 pm.
