Men's Soccer falls from unbeated after 2-1 loss to Clayton State

SALISBURY, NC – Visiting Clayton College and State University defeated host Catawba 2-1 in men’s soccer action on Monday night at Frock Field. The Lakers, ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, improve to 5-2, while Catawba, ranked fifth in the region this week, falls to 4-1-1. Clayton State controlled play early and got a pair of goals in the opening 16 minutes. Pa’Alasan Jahumpa (London, ENGLAND) assisted on each goal, the first to Shawn Baddock (Randhurst, SOUTH AFRICA) and the second to Denton Giles (Griffin, GA). Catawba threatened several times late in the half, but CC&SU keeper Heath Padgett (Gainesville, GA) kept the Tribe off the board. After a light drizzle for most of the first half, the skies opened and the final half was played in a driving rainstorm. Catawba continued to press the action in the final half, but could not break through until Zay-Zay Gilewala (Monrovia, LIBERIA) netted his seventh of the season with just over 17 minutes to play. That would be as close as Catawba get as the Lakers held on over the final 15 minutes CLAYTON STATE (5-2) 2 0 -- 2 CATAWBA (4-1-1) 0 1 -- 1 SCORING SUMMARY CS - 12:32 – Shaun Baddock (5) (Pa’Alasan Jahumpa) CS - 15:55 – Denton Giles (1) (Jahumpa) C - 72:49 – Zay-Zay Gilewala (7) (Brennan Regner) Shots at Goal: Catawba 16, Clayton State 8 Corner Kicks: Catawba 6, Clayton State 2 Goalkeeper Saves: Clayton State – Heath Padgett 6 Catawba – Dan Fitzgerald 0, Carl McMahon (46’) 1 Offsides: Clayton State 6, Catawba 2 Fouls: Clayton State 26, Catawba 21 Cautions: CS – Dowling (32’), LeClerc (61’); C – Rubio (33’) ATT: 78 #######
