Baseball Sweeps Saturday DH With Augusta
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied to win the opener then took game two to complete a Saturday doubleheader sweep over visiting Augusta in baseball action at Newman Park. The Catawba Indians won game won 7-6 before rolling to an 11-2 victory in the nightcap. The Indians improve to 24-9, while the Jaguars fall to 14-17.
Augusta took a 6-0 lead after five and a half innings in game one. Clint Hardy connected on a two-run homer in the third then the Jaguars plated four in the sixth. Brent Alford doubled home one run and Tyler Roberts capped the frame with a two-out, two-run double.
Catawba answered the Augusta outburst with four of its own in the sixth. Malachi Hanes (Charlotte, N.C./Butler) had the key hit, a two-run triple. Zach Almond (Richfield, N.C./N. Stanly/UNCG) cut the margin to 6-5 with a solo home run in the seventh and Chance Bowden (Salisbury, N.C./Salisbury) followed a Kyle Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley) single with a two-run homer to put Catawba on top.
August put a runner at third with two outs in the eighth and after a walk, Bryan Blanton (Albemarle, N.C./Albemarle) came in to get the final out of the frame. Augusta put the tying run at first on a walk with two outs in the ninth, but Luke Setzer (Salisbury, N.C./E. Rowan) secured a deep fly to right to end the game.
Connor Johnson (Rockwell, N.C./E. Rowan) picked up the win with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief. He gave a hit and a walk with two strikeouts to up his record to 4-1. Blanton notched his eighth save.
Smith, Bowden, Hanes and Jeremy Simpson (Cleveland, N.C./W. Rowan) all had two hits for Catawba. Bowden delivered three RBI. Will Zimmer had three hits for Augusta.
Setzer doubled home two runs to help stake Catawba to a 3-0 lead after two innings of the nightcap. Augusta trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but Almond connected on a three-run homer in the Catawba fourth to put the Indians on top 7-2. Catawba added four more unearned run in the fifth for the final margin.
Almond went 3-for-3 with four RBI in game two. Setzer and Cameron Morrison (Robbins, N.C./N. Moore) each had two hits and two RBI. Jacob Nester (Kernersville, N.C./E. Forsyth/Chowan) had two hits and scored two runs.
Hunter Shepherd (Salisbury, N.C./Homeschool) improved to 5-0 with four innings of work. He allowed two runs (one earned) off a hit and a walk. He struck out two.
Cody Lanford had two of Augusta’s five hits. Matthew Kuhlenberg (1-4) took the loss.
The teams, who are meeting for the first time, will finish the three-game series on Sunday at 1 pm.
