Women's Lacrosse Runs Past Wolves
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba cruised past visiting Newberry 18-5 in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Catawba Indians improve to 12-4 overall and 4-3 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 5-11 and 1-6.
The Lady Indians dominated from the outset, scoring eight unanswered goals over the first 10 minutes. Gianna Pezzulo (Henneker, N.H./Cushing Academy) scored three times in the early burst and had the opening goal just 11 seconds into the contest.
Rachel Dillon got Newberry on the scoreboard, but Catawba notched the final four goals of the half to lead 12-1 at the break. Pezzulo scored her fourth and final goal to start the second half and Kirstyn Kruse (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Williston Northampton Prep) added a pair to up the margin to 15-2 with 18:45 to go.
Nine different Lady Indians took part in the scoring with four others adding assists. Pezzulo finished with four goals and two assists and Kruse tallied four goals. Crista Clayton (Jacksonville Beach, Fla./Fletcher) had three goals. Dillon and Maddie Campbell had two goals for Newberry.
Catawba held a 39-13 edge in shots and won 16 of 24 draw controls. Brandy Bowers made 15 saves for Newberry. Madison Anselmo (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Grace Brennen (Cumming, Ga./Lambert) shared time in the pipes for Catawba. Anselmo had three saves and Brennen stopped two shots.
Catawba travels to Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday to close out the regular season against the Bears at 4 pm. The winner will host a first round game of the SAC Tournament.
