Men's Lacrosse Falls to Queens in SAC Tournament
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Host Queens topped Catawba 13-6 in the first round of the South Atlantic Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday afternoon at the Queens Sports Complex. The Royals improve to 9-6 and advance to Saturday’s semifinal. The Catawba Indians end their season at 8-8.
Cole Fanzo (Crofton, Md./S. River) gave Catawba a 1-0 lead at the 12:45 mark of the first quarter, but Queens responded with four goals and led the rest of the way. Two Nick Sawyer goals put Queens up 2-1 as he scored at the 9:54 and 3:13 marks of the quarter.
Fanzo and Liam Lynch (Marietta, Ga./Pope) scored to get Catawba within a goal late in the first half. Justin Swick put the Royals up 5-4 at the break on his tally with just a second to go. Queens led 8-5 going to the final quarter and opened the period with three goals in two minutes to lead 11-5.
Sawyer scored four goals with two assists for Queens. Laszlo Henning followed with three goals, while Swick had two goals and an assist. Anthony Valenza made 10 saves.
Shots were about even with Queens leading 38-35, but the Royals held a 45-28 edge in ground balls and won 19 of 21 face-offs.
