Volleyball Rallies Late to Snag Opening Win
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba rallied late in the fifth set to claim a win its season-opening volleyball match over visiting Montevallo at the Catawba Invitational on Friday night at Goodman Gym. It was the opener for both teams.
After outlasting Catawba in a tight fourth set, Montevallo used a three-point spurt to go up 10-7 in the deciding set. Amanda Nugent killed off the first two of those points for the Falcons. The Catawba Indians would storm back with five straight points to grab the lead for good.
Freshman Macy Eidenberger got the first point, while Allie Grubb and Rachel Stanford combined on a block to make it 10-9. Morgan Hester's kill tied it before another block from Grubb and Stanford pushed Catawba ahead 11-10. Montevallo cut the lead to 12-11 on a kill by Evelina Teran then Catawba scored the final three points, getting a kill from Eidenberger then a kill and solo block from freshman Micah Ensor to end the match.
Kimberly Hurtado led Catawba with 14 kills, while Grubb followed with 11 kills and seven blocks. Libero Allie Benton recorded 34 digs with Stanford handing out 45 assists and posting 16 digs. Brie Blume had 17 kills for Montevallo and was followed by Nugent with 16.
Catawba returns to action for a pair of matches on Saturday. The Lady Indians face Belmont Abbey at 10 am and Chowan at 3 pm.
