Catawba Drops Match at Winston-Salem St
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians dropped a non-conference match at Winston-Salem State University in Whitaker Gymnasium on Friday. The Rams defeated the Catawba Lady Indians 13-25, 22-25, and 17-25, giving them the 3-0 win. Winston-Salem State is now 2-3 and Catawba drops to 2-2 on the season.
Winston-Salem jumped out to an early 12-4 lead in the first set, capitalizing on nine Catawba errors. Macy Eidenberger led the Lady Indians with 2 kills and a service ace. Allie Grubb, Kimberly Hurtado and Alexa Marcy added the remaining three hits for the first set.
Catawba put pressure on the Rams during the second set tying the game three different times. Kills by Morgan Hester, Micah Ensor, Grub and Eidenberger all came at crucial times during the set but were not enough to put Catawba on top. Eidenberger led Catawba again with 4 hits with Marcy adding 3. Rachel Stanford, Ensor and Grubb each posted 2 kills.
The Lady Indians took an early lead in the third set; however, it wouldn’t withstand the attack by the Rams. Winston-Salem State took the lead after a 5-all tie on a Catawba attack error. The Lady Indians couldn’t get their momentum going again and would trail the remainder of the set. Catawba’s attack was led by Ensor and Grubb each contributing 3 kills. Hurtado and Marcy each added a kill for the Lady Indians.
Catawba looks to bounce back as they open conference play next Friday, September 15 at Mars Hill at 6 pm. They will return home on Saturday, September 16 as they host Tusculum at 2 in the afternoon.
