Belmonts Abbey Tops Men's Soccer
BELMONT, N.C. -- Belmont Abbey swept past Catawba College 4-0 in men’s soccer action on Saturday at the Alumni Field. The Crusaders improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-3.
Belmont Abbey took the lead, scoring their first goal just before the end of the first half. In the 39th minute Julien Armaroli scored from a header off a corner kick by Nando Morales. The Crusaders doubled the lead just minutes into the second half. Geinner Duque scored the goal with Aaron Madison on the assist after a rebound on a corner kick.
The Crusaders put the game away with a pair of goals in the final five minutes. Aaron Madison with a blast from the inside right in the 86th minute for goal number three with Morales on the assist. Morales followed up immediately with a goal of his own from the left side. Mark Trompeter added the assist.
Catawba’s goalies combined for five saves. Joe Gonzalez started and saved four shots in his 56 minutes of play. Trey Orner had one save over the final 34 minutes. Catawba had a total of nine shots to 19 for the Crusaders.
Catawba returns to action on Wednesday as the Indians battle Lenior-Rhyne in a 7:30 kickoff at Frock Field.
