Men's Soccer Drops High-Scoring Affair With Lander
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lander out-scored Catawba to take a 6-3 decision in men’s soccer action on Saturday night at the Frock Soccer Complex. The Bearcats improve to 7-2, while Catawba Indians fall to 1-6.
Catawba opened the scoring in the 14th minute when freshman Finley Carroll collected a through ball from Hunter Faust and notched his first goal from about 15 yards on the right side. Lander took little time in pulling even as Sam Lofts equalized just five minutes later.
The Bearcats broke the halftime deadlock in the 54th minute when Lofts dribbled down the left side and found the net. Two minutes later Jordan Skelton collected a loose ball in the box and made it 3-1 for the visitors. Two more quick strikes upped the margin to 5-1. Skelton converted a penalty in the 61st minute and Richard Bryan took a pass from Thibault Chretien in the box for a close range shot in the 63rd.
Catawba pulled two goals back in the final 15 minutes. Philipp Hollenhorst converted a penalty kick in the 81st minute after a foul in the box that reduced Lander to 10 men. Three minutes later Tobias Iriah made it 5-3. Lander regrouped and got a final goal with two minutes to play on a tally by Robbie Young.
Lander held a 17-8 edge in shots. Evan Jeckells stopped five shots for the Indians. Dean Cowdray had two saves for the Bearcats.
Catawba will host Queens on Wednesday night at 7:30 pm for its next outing.
