Volleyball Falls in Four to Mars Hill
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Indians fell in four sets to Mars Hill Friday night in Goodman Gymnasium. Mars Hill took the first set 25-16. Catawba bounced back and won the second set 25-22. The Lions outlasted Catawba in the last two sets to win 25-16 and 25-23. The loss drops the Indians to 3-13 for the season and 1-11 in the South Atlantic Conference. Mars Hill improved to 6-13 overall and 4-8 in the conference.
After surrendering the first set, the Lady Indians pulled it together and jumped out to an early lead in the second game. Consecutive kills for Mars Hill gave them their only lead at 9-8. Rachel Stanford tied it back at 9 all with a kill from Morgan Hester. The Lions looked to make a comeback, tying the set at 18 all, but a Kill by Abby Benton put Catawba back on top. The Indians scored the last six points on kills by Kimberly Hurtado, Macy Eidenberger, and Micah Ensor and a service error by Mars Hill.
Mars Hill seemed to be cruising to their third set victory leading Catawba 20-12. A late push by the Indians sent them on an 11 to 4 point run putting pressure on the Lions at 23-24. Catawba capitalized on Mars Hill’s six errors and getting kills from Ensor, Hurtado, and Eidenberger during their drive. A kill by Mars Hill’s Sally Anne Johnson finished the set and match.
Ensor led the Indians’ attack with 12 kills. Eidenberger contributed 10 kills, 16 digs, and two service aces. Stanford dished out 24 assists and collected 21 digs. Allison Benton led the defense with 27 digs. Hester added 16 assists and 15 digs for the Indians.
Catawba travels to Tusculum Saturday, October 21 for a 12:30 pm South Atlantic Conference match.
