Volleyball Drops Match to Carson Newman
SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba hosted Carson-Newman for their senior night as they honored their lone senior Rachel Stanford on Saturday in Goodman Gymnasium. The Eagles swept the Catawba Indians in the South Atlantic Conference match with scores of 23-25, 16-25, and 18-25. Catawba is now 3-17 overall and 1-15 in the SAC, while Carson-Newman improves to 14-10 and 9-7.
Macy Eidenberger led the Indians attack with eight kills and 13 digs. Micah Ensor added four kills and Allie Grubb and Kimberly Hurtado each tallied three. Allison Benton led the defense collecting 31 digs. Stanford recorded 15 assists, two kills, 10 digs, and a service ace and block for her senior night.
Catawba jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before allowing Carson-Newman to score in the first set. The Indians led the game 20-14 before the Eagles went on an 11-3 run to finish the set on top.
The Indians kept the second set close the majority of the set until the Eagles broke away and took a 17-12 lead. Five Catawba errors and three kills by Marnie Streeter gave Carson-Newman the last eight points they needed to win the set.
Carson-Newman took an immediate 8-0 lead in the third set. Catawba was unable to get their offense going, only recording seven kills. A late push for the Indians sent them on an 8-5 run but was not enough to hold off the Eagles.
Catawba will return to Goodman Gymnasium on November 1 as they host a non-conference match against Winston-Salem State at 7 pm.
