Volleyball Swept at Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - - Volleyball traveled to Wingate University for a South Atlantic Conference match against the Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Cuddy Arena. The Catawba Indians were swept by Wingate dropping them to 4-19 overall and 2-16 in the conference.
Micah Ensor led the Indians attack with nine kills. Abby Benton, Allie Grubb, Macy Eidenberger, Rachel Stanford and Kimberly Hurtado each added four kills and Jade Brooks recorded one to finish out the 30 kills for Catawba. Stanford also handed out 15 assists, while Morgan Hester dished out 11. Allison Benton tallied 13 digs to lead the defense.
Catawba took the lead on a Wingate hitting error 19-18 in the first set. After a kill by Eidenberger, Wingate took a timeout and came back to score two straight points to tie the set again at 20. A kill by Hurtado tied the set for the last time at 22 all and would be the last time Catawba scored. Wingate rattled off the last three points on two kills and an attack error by the Indians to win the set 22-25.
The Bulldogs took the quick lead in the second game of the match gaining a six point lead at 10-4. Catawba’s offense struggled to get going, resulting in a negative hitting percentage. Wingate maintained a large lead throughout and took the game 15-25.
Catawba battled to stay with the Bulldogs early in the third set, but three Indian errors and three Wingate kills gave them a 6-12 lead. The Indians continued to put pressure on the Bulldogs coming back to within one at 14-15. Catawba’s push was not enough as Wingate finished out the set 20-25.
The Indians return back to Goodman Gymnasium for another South Atlantic Conference match as they host Coker at 6:30 on Tuesday evening.
