Volleyball Sweeps Coker in Final Home Match of the Season
SALISBURY, N.C. - - The Catawba Lady Indians swept Coker in their last home South Atlantic Conference match Tuesday evening in Goodman Gymnasium. The 3-0 win improves Catawba’s record to 5-19 overall and 3-16 in the conference. Coker dropped to 13-16 and 6-13 in the SAC.
Catawba hit for .321, a match high this season, and was led by senior Rachel Stanford. Stanford hit a match high .567, recorded 18 kills, 20 assists, and 15 digs in her last home match at Catawba. Micah Ensor
tallied 12 kills hitting her match high .400. Morgan Hester
handed out 24 assists and collected 14 digs. Allison Benton
also had 15 digs for the Indians.
Stanford had consecutive kills to break a 17 all tie and give Catawba a two point lead in the first set. An Indian service error, a kill by Coker, and two more kills from Stanford made the score 21-19. Catawba used two attack errors by the Cobras and a Stanford service ace to increase the lead to 24-19. Coker scored one more point and Allie Grubb
finished the set with a kill giving Catawba the win 25-20.
Catawba allowed Coker to stay in the second set until they broke a 13 all tie on a Jade Brooks
kill. Ensor and Brooks rattled off two more kills to give the Indians a three point lead. The Cobras tried to push back but were only able to come within in one of Catawba at 18-17. The Indians finished out the second set on a 7-3 scoring run, winning 25-20 once again.
Coker jumped out to an early lead in set three, but Catawba fought to keep it close and eventually tying it at 14 and taking a two point lead on three Stanford kills. Catawba led by five at the 20-15 mark and cruised into another 25-20 set win.
Catawba will travel to Newberry on Saturday for their final match of the 2017 season.
