Men's Basketball Drops Decision at UNCP
PEMBROKE, N.C. -- Catawba fell to host UNC Pembroke 91-67 in the final game of the SAC/PBC Challenge on Saturday night at Lumbee Guaranty Court. The Braves, ranked 21st in the D2SIDA Division II Poll, improve to 2-0. The Catawba Indians fall to 0-2.
UNC Pembroke never trailed and began to pull away midway through the first half. The Braves increased a two-point lead to 29-16 at the 7:48 mark of the first half. Catawba pulled back to within 39-33 at the break.
The Indians were close early in the second half before a 7-0 run by the Braves that was capped on a three-pointer and a layup by David Strother pushed UNCP out in front 54-39 with 14:41 left. Pembroke kept the double-digit margin the rest of the way.
Catawba got 16 points from Jerrin Morrison, who added eight rebounds. Malik Constantine and Jeremy McLaughlin each chipped in with 11 points. The Indians played without Jameel Taylor, who was injured in the opener.
UNCP put five players in double figures with Nigel Grant and Akia Pruitt posting double-doubles. Grant had 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Pruitt tallied 11 points with 10 boards. Strother scored 16 points and Jamal Bryant 14. The Braves controlled the with a 50-31 margin.
Catawba returns to action on Friday at Albany State at 7 pm.
