Double-Doubles By Morrison and Constantine Lead Men's Basketball Over Albany St.
ALBANY, Ga. -- Catawba claimed its first win of the season with a 77-69 victory over host Albany State at the Ram Rising Men’s Basketball Tournament on Friday night at the West Campus Arena. The Catawba Indians improve to 1-2, while the Rams fall to 0-4.
Jerrin Morrison and Malik Constantine posted double-doubles to lead the Indians. Morrison tallied 23 points with 10 rebounds, while Constantine tossed in 21 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds. Jeremy McLaughlin also scored in double figures with 12 points and added seven rebounds.
Catawba never trailed and held a 39-29 lead at the break. The Indians would increase its lead to 16 early in the final half then held off a late Albany State rally.
Down 13 with just over four minutes to play, JaDon Davis and Rahdin Hughes hit on back-to-back three-pointers to cut the Catawba lead to 69-62. After a turnover, ASU pulled within 69-64 and then a layup by Hughes with 1:49 left cut the margin to 70-66.
Constantine, who went 8-of-9 at the line, sank a pair of free throws with 1:30 to go and two breakaway dunks by Morrison in the final 30 seconds iced the game. The Indians shot 40% from the field, while the Rams made just 29%. Catawba also enjoyed a 48-34 edge on the glass.
Hughes led Albany State with 20 points, while Davis added 17, canning five of nine from long range.
Catawba will face Montevallo, Saturday at noon in its final game at the Ram Rising Tournament.
