SALISBURY, N.C. -- Terri Rogers and Madison Hallman posted career-highs to help Catawba snap a three-game slide with a 75-72 win over visiting Chowan in women’s basketball action on Monday night at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-3, while the previously unbeaten Hawks fall to 4-1.

Rogers notched 17 of her career-best 32 points in the opening half, while Hallman picked up 10 of her career-mark of 19 points in the final quarter. Rogers just missed her second straight double-double, finishing with nine rebounds. Serena Brown handed out six assists and pulled down seven boards.

Chowan’s Chantel Roberts finished with 29 points, including six three-pointers. Three of those came in the final minutes as the Hawks tried to rally back. Roberts would pull down eight rebounds. Jada Lee scored 15 points before fouling out in the final moments.

The teams played through seven ties and eight lead changes. Both teams put up 40 points in the second half, leaving Hallman’s buzzer-beating three-pointer to close the first half as the winning margin.

A 12-1 run over a five-minute span in the opening quarter paced the Lady Indians to an early 15-7 edge. It was 15-9 at the end of the first 10 minutes, but Chowan eventually tied it on a Roberts three-pointer with 53 second remaining in the half. Rogers put Catawba back on top, but Dhyamond Crenshaw tied it again with five seconds left. Hallman was able to get up court and get off a 22-footer as time expired for Catawba’s 35-32 edge at the break.

Chowan used a 9-2 run to open the second half to go on top 41-37 following a four-point play by Lee, who was fouled while making a three-pointer. The lead changed hands several times during the period with another late Hallman three (at the 21 second mark) put the Lady Indians up 50-47 after three quarters.

Catawba jumped to a 60-53 with 7:39 to go on the last of Hallman’s five three-pointers. Chowan clawed back, cutting the margin to a point on a three-pointer by Roberts with 5:34 to go.

Two free throws by Alexis Newbold gave Catawba a 71-63 with edge with 1:04 left, but Roberts connected on a trio of three-pointers around free throws from Hallman to close the gap to 73-72 with seven second to play. Marshauna Butler hit two free throws, but Roberts had a shot to tie in the final second but her three-pointer was off the mark as were two close in follow shots before the buzzer.

The Lady Indians snapped a recent cold spell by hitting on 46% from the field. Rogers made 13 of her 19 shots. Chowan hit on 36% of its attempts.

Catawba travels to UNC Wilmington for an exhibition game with the Seahawks on Friday afternoon at 4 pm.
