Women's Basketball Opens SAC Play with Win Over Queens
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - - Catawba opened South Atlantic Conference women's basketball play at Queens University with a 73-44 win. The Catawba Lady Indians improve to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Royals drop to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Lady Indians shot 45% from the field and 79% from the free throw line. Terri Rogers led Catawba with 18 points and six rebounds. She went 7-of-14 from the field and perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Serena Brown added 17 points hitting 7-of-10 from the field and three from beyond the arc.
Catawba jumped out early in the first quarter. Queens tied the game at 11 and the Indians answered with five straight points before allowing the Royals to score once more in the quarter. Catawba finished the first with an 18-13 edge.
The Lady Indians increased their lead to eight quickly in the second quarter. The Royals rattled off six points to come within two, but that is the closest they could get to the Indians. Catawba closed out the half on a 15 to 5 run to take a 38-26 lead to the break.
Catawba continued to build on their lead in the third quarter, leading by 23 at the 2:06 mark. The Indians began the final ten minutes up 57-37. Catawba held the Royals to only seven points in the fourth, while scoring 16 to give the Indians a 29-point edge with a minute to play. Lade Adepoju led Queens with 11 points.
The Lady Indians will travel to Harrogate, TN for a South Atlantic Conference game against Lincoln Memorial University on Saturday at 2 pm.
