SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba senior Jerrin Morrison scored 37 points as the Catawba Indians held off St. Augustine’s to post a 76-73 overtime victory in men’s basketball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. Catawba improves to 3-5 and snaps a three-game slide, while the Falcons fall to 2-8.
Tyre Gathright hit a pair of three-pointers for St. Augustine’s in the final 12 seconds of regulation to put the game into overtime as Catawba squandered a late lead. The Indians would never trail as RJ Robinson opened the extra session for the Indians with a jumper and a three-pointer for a 69-64 edge.

After two free throws from Jameel Taylor, the Indians were up 76-69. Quincy January scored and was fouled to make it 76-71. He couldn’t convert the three-point play, but the Falcons rebounded the miss and a Kenneth Collins layup made it 76-73.
Morrison went to the line, but missed both free throws with six seconds left. Gathright was forced to take a hurried shot just before the buzzer that was well off the mark and the Indians prevailed.

The Indians led by as many as 17 in the opening half and by double digits for most of the second half until St. Augustine’s clawed back in the final five minutes. Three-pointers from Gathright and Collins brought the visitors within 57-51 with 4:35 to go. Another three-pointer by Collins trimmed the margin to 58-54 with 3:42 remaining.
Catawba held a 61-54 lead with 3:20 left after a pair of free throws by Jeremy McLaughlin. A second-chance basket by January and a layup by Gathright got the Falcons with 61-58 with 1:50 to go.
