Stout Defense Propels Women's Basketball Past Anderson
SALISBURY, N.C. -- Catawba dominated the final 25 minutes in posting a 63-46 win over visiting Anderson in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Catawba Indians level their overall mark to 5-5, while improving to 3-1 in the SAC. The Trojans fall to 8-4 and 3-2.
The teams were tied at the end of the opening quarter and the Trojans were up 22-19 after a layup by Ace Easter at the 5:39 mark of the second quarter. That, however, would be the final points of the half for Anderson as Catawba’s defense stifled the visitors.
Toni Tucker’s three-pointer with 5:31 to go in the half tied the game and Terri Rogers gave Catawba the lead on a basket with 2:54 left before the break. The Lady Indians led 28-22 at the half.
Catawba built a double-digit lead midway through the third quarter on a three-pointer by Serena Brown at the 4:15 mark. The Lady Indians held a 47-37 edge after three quarters and led by double figures the rest of the way. Madison Hallman pushed the margin to 54-37 with 7:18 remaining.
Rogers led Catawba with 16 points and had eight rebounds. Brown added 13 points and dished out eight assists. Hallman tallied 11 points with Marshauna Butler collecting 10 points. Madison Baggett was the lone Trojan in double figures with 11 points.
Neither team shot well, Catawba finished at 35% and Anderson 32%. The Lady Indians held a plus-five margin on the boards and committed five fewer turnovers.
The Lady Indians cap their pre-Christmas schedule on Tuesday, hosting Wingate in a league contest at 2 pm.
