Women's Basketball Falls in Tight Game to #22 Wingate
WINGATE, N.C. - - Catawba Lady Indians fell to host number 22 Wingate University in women’s basketball action on Wednesday night in Cuddy Arena. The 69-67 decision drops Catawba to 12-9 on the season and 10-4 in the South Atlantic Conference, while the Bulldogs improve to 17-3 and 11-2.
The Lady Indians shot 46% from the floor and 64% from the free throw line. Serena Brown led Catawba with 19 points. Terri Rogers recorded 13 for the Lady Indians. Wingate shot 51% and was led by Caroline Averette’s 19 points.
Catawba took a five point lead early in the first 10-minute period. Wingate answered and there were three tied scores and two lead changes before the Lady Indians finished the first quarter with a 22-16 point edge. Catawba maintained control of the second quarter, taking a two point advantage to the break.
After the half time break, the Lady Indians built their lead to six. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-3 point run to finish the third 10-minute period leading Catawba 55-47. The Lady Indians fought their way back and regained the lead with 1:17 left in regulation. The seventh tie of the game come with less than a minute to play. A Catawba foul sent the Bulldogs to the free throw line, where they hit two free throws to close out the game.
Catawba returns to South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday when they travel to Anderson at 2 pm.
