SALISBURY, N.C. - - Catawba Lady Indians dropped a South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball game against Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday evening in Goodman Gymnasium. The 56-61 loss drops Catawba to 12-11 overall and 10-6 in the SAC. The Bears improve to 13-11 overall and 7-9 in the conference.

The Lady Indians shot 37% from the field and 64% from the free throw line. Terri Rogers led Catawba with 13 points and six rebounds. Shemya Stanbeck added six points and five steals for the Lady Indians. LR shot 52% from the field and 71% from the free throw line. Madi Suddreth led the Bears with 20 points and seven rebounds.

Catawba started off slow as Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Toni Tucker scored the first two points for the Lady Indians at the 5:28 mark to ignite a seven point run. Catawba tied the score at 13 with under a minute remaining. A jump shot with just seconds left gave LR a two point edge to begin the second quarter.

The second 10-minute period began much like the first as the Bears went on a seven point run. Catawba then scored eight straight points to come back within one. Lenoir-Rhyne scored with 24 seconds remaining in the half to lead by three, but Taisha DeShazo scored for the Lady Indians right before the buzzer for Catawba to only trail by one at the half.
The Lady Indians came back from the break and scored first to take the lead. The third quarter was a tight battle with both teams fighting for the lead. Catawba came up just short at the end taking a two point deficit to the final 10-minute period.

The Bears regained control of the game in the fourth quarter, leading by as many as eight midway through the final 10-minutes. The Lady Indians did not give up and fought to come within three with 15 seconds left to play. A last second foul by Catawba sent Lenoir-Rhyne to the free throw line. Both free throws were made and the Bears finished the game leading by five.

Catawba will travel to Hartsville, S.C. next Wednesday for a South Atlantic Conference game against host Coker. The Lady Indians and the Coker Cobras will tipoff at 6 pm.
